From unassuming accountants club to an association of financial thinkers, planners and decision makers
One hundred years ago, an accountant by the name of John Leslie decided that the time was ripe for a professional association. Mr. Leslie, then Assistant Comptroller of the Canadian Pacific Railway, got together with two other CPR staff accountants, E.B. Manning and F.A. Cousins, and formed the Canadian Accountants' Association. The group, they determined, would "encourage improvement in skills and job performance" among serious, like-minded accountants. What foresight!
Today, a century after Mr. Leslie established his unassuming association in Montreal, CGA is the fastest-growing accounting designation in Canada, representing CGAs and students in more than 80 countries around the globe. As respected accounting business leaders, CGAs offer expertise in financial and management
accounting, auditing, taxation, finance, information technology, ethics and management.
Program of Professional Studies exemplifies tradition of excellence
CGA-Canada's prestigious Program of Professional Studies has its roots in a series of courses designed, in 1910, to sharpen members' skills and advance the profession. Over the next four decades, those courses were greatly enhanced and, in the 1950s, a partnership between CGA-BC and the University of British Columbia's School of Commerce produced what would become a national curriculum standard. In the late 1980s, CGA-Canada pioneered competency-based accounting education, and revamped and updated all of its courses. Rigorous and demanding, the Program of Professional Studies is renowned for its high standards and breadth of training.
100 years strong
This year, CGA-Canada and its provincial and territorial affiliates are proudly marking the birth of the CGA designation. As part of the celebration, dubbed 100 years strong, CGA-Canada is searching for 100 CGAs who have made a difference. Nominees must have made a significant impact on their community, government, service organization, profession or to humanity at large in at least five areas. The Search is On! For 100 CGAs who have made a difference.
